Winter Carnival
The buttons were from 1970’s and 1980’s. The one from the 1970’s said, “Winter Madness A.D.H.S” and had two ribbons one gold and one blue, the colour on the button itself is a faded gold. As for the one from the 1980’s, it was yellow and looked less dated, it said, “Winter Carnival.” Both pins acted as a pass to participate in the games. Some of the games included bob sled races because the hill at the back of the school was less steep, staff vs student hockey games, and dances. Sometimes the events were held at other places such as the rink.

Lora Dunster (Pattemore)

She was reported as: “Successful shot putter grabs the gold.” In 2000, Lora Dunster squashed a long-standing drought in women’s throwing events at Athens DHS. Four Medals came out of OFSSA in 2000 and 2001 for Dunster, a gold in shot put and a gold in discus and a bronze in both discuss and shot put. In 2000 she finished in the regular meets with what the newspapers called "subpar throwing” but in OFSSA that year she shocked all in attendance and came out on top with gold. This was something she never thought would happen, saying in The Mural in June of that year “gold was a goal of mine.” Lora threw an amazing 35.32m in discus to secure her spot for gold and an 11.74m in shot put under the wing of her mentor and coach Joellen Bauder. After graduating, she was accepted at Windsor university where she went on to finish with exceptional 3rd place finishes in most of her events. 20 years later track still is a major part in Lora’s life as a part time track and field coach for the strong Athens DHS team. She has also coached many students in the past few years, bringing her right back to the LAGASSA, EOSSA, East Regionals and OFSAA championships. She is a huge mentor for her daughter, Katherine, who placed fourth in LGASSA.
“A gold medal is the dream, I want to follow my mom’s footsteps” Katherine explains, however, it’s not just about the medals for her, “Just getting to spend time with my mom and learn new things and watch her coach kids about how to do something she loves and not lose her passion for track and field it is an awesome for me to experience,” Pattemore explained. “I get to be coached by my mom and that is an amazing statement for me. She is not just my mom she is the big reason I made it to EOSAA last year I couldn’t do it without her.”
Lora continues to be a huge part of track and field, and her accomplishments with the Athens DHS track team will continue to be shared.
