During World War II, more than 1 million Canadians served in the armed forces out of a population of about 11 million. Canadian troops played key roles in major operations such as the Battle of the Atlantic, helping keep vital supply routes open, and the Normandy landings, where they stormed Juno Beach on D-Day. Canada also made significant contributions on the home front, becoming a major producer of ships, aircraft, vehicles, and munitions for the Allied war effort. By the end of the war, over 45,000 Canadians had lost their lives and Canada had emerged with a stronger economy and a more prominent role on the world stage.
