The Tackaberry family is very well known in the village of Athens and many other local cities and towns. They are known for their donations to charities, their achievements, and their overall involvement in the community.
The History of the Tackaberry’s
George Tackaberry left school after finishing his grade 10 year. He bought his first truck at the age of 17 which was a 1949 Chevrolet for three-hundred and twenty-five dollars. George started his company in 1957.
George got married to Joan Nee Lawson on August 31st, 1958. Four years after Mr. and Mrs. Tackaberry got married, they bought and moved into a house on Washburn Road.
George and Joan Tackaberry had four children - Karen, Charlie, June, and Kevin. All their kids worked at Tackaberry’s helping to run the company.
They built a truck called Belly Dump in their own shop, which let’s stone out from the Belly of the truck to spread stone down on the roads. Townships and counties use Belly Dumps to do road maintenance on stone roads.
In the early 1970’s, George Tackaberry began crushing stone, with help from employees in their own quarry behind the main garage. Seven years after they started crushing in the quarry, they also purchased their first crusher. In early 1980’s they started into the paving business.
In the span of nine years, George bought a number of asphaslt plants and gravel companies.
Today Tackaberry’s has four main locations, six seasonal scale houses, and over 50 pits and quarries.
